The aim of this research work was to remedy the lack in organic matter of Niayes (Sénégal) gardening market soils by using a widely available and renewable biomass, by means of the rameal chipped wood (RCW) technique. These substrate are mixed and buried into the soil in a 10 cm depth - 10 m2 test plots with 5 repetitions are arranged, at the same time as control plots, equally with 5 repetitions, without RCW. Measurements of growth, vegetable production, primary biomass as well as chemical analyses of the soil and the aerial and root parts of plants are carried out.
The results show better average growth for tomato plants (Solanum aethiopicum) on plots with organic amendment compared with control plots, that is to say 2.63 cm at the end of 45 growth days. Concerning vegetable production, 9.2 tons per hectare were obtained for test plots against 1.7 tons per hectare for pilot plots and for primary biomass, respectively 8.35 tons per hectare and 2.95 tons per hectare are obtained.
The analysis of the cultivation vegetative full phase soil shows a rise in the rate of all the valued parameters, compared with the sample. Thus a difference of 0.32 meq % for the cationic exchange capacity (C.E.C.), 0.07% for the nitrogen (N2), 0.1 meq% for the magnesium (Mg), 0.03 meq% for the potassium (K), 11.9 ppm for the assimilatable phosphorus (P) and 0.06% for the humic acids can be noticed. Comparable results are observed for the chemical analysis of aerial and root parts of plants.
These data confirmed our previous research work and shows that the RCW play an important role in the paedogenesis finding expression in nutriment good availability for the plant and better output. Nematicid effects were observed in the RCW amended plots. Further studies will allow these organic substrate action on the market-gardening phytoparasite nematodes to be better understood.
