Community Support for Local Organic Farming. P1; 94

Numerous communities and cities in Germany are now supporting organic farming on a local or regional level. The reasons are various: Authorities wish for example to protect their flora and fauna, to save the costs of clearing drinking water of pesticides, to supply the population with fresh food, to promote the regional economy including tourism, and to bring back life into the cities. Activities of these cities include financial incentives for farmers to convert, establishment of new outlets for organic products (i.e. canteens), establishment of country markets in the cities, and consumer education.
Prominent examples are the cities of Hamburg (conversion of municipal farms), München (conversion aid for farmers from the water works) and Frankfurt (co-ordination of the supply of the municipal canteens with organic products).
The poster gives an overview of the aims and achievements of the most successful projects in Germany.
