A research orchard in Canterbury, New Zealand at
the Winchmore ResearchStation has been managed to produce commercial grade organic apples
as well as providing a site for both component and whole systems research. The 4 ha
orchard has been managed organically for 6 years under »Bio-gro« registration (NZ
organic production standards) and has had a science team encompassing many disciplines
working on a diverse science programme. A strong focus in that programme has been
understorey management, soil fertility and nutrient cycling. This paper will review five years of trialwork looking at management of understorey for biological apple production and in particular nutrient cycling and effects on tree growth, fruit production and fruit quality. |
