Strategies to promote sustainable agriculture consist mainly of communication, education and capacity building. These efforts are addressed firstly to conventionally working farmers, advisors, administrators, politicians and to consumers. In a three years project farming systems are investigated for sustainability and strategies for the conversion of conventional farms are formulated. This work is based on the investigation of organic and conventional farms. Research groups check for, e.g., biodiversity, mass and energy flow and qualitative criteria like groundwater pollution. An important goal is to develop and establish a leitmotif of regional sustainable agriculture, including scientific data, sociological and ethical elements.
