The objective of the present study was to
evaluate the effect of chemical, organic and biodynamic fertilisation on yield, quality and
post-harvesting conservation of carrots. The experiment was carried out in the
Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agronomy (FCA/UNESP), in Sco Manuel/Brazil, between
May and September 1993. A randomised block experimental design was used with six
treatments and four replications. Treatments were A) NPK = N, P, K(100 gr./m2 4-14-8), B)
NPK+MICRO = N, P, K plus micronutrients, (100gr./m2 4-14-8 + 5 gr. Yogue), C) NPK+EST N,
P, K (50 gr./m2) plus cattle manure (2 kg/m2), D) EST cattle manure (4 kg/m2), E) COMP
compost (4kg/m2), F) COMP+BIO compost (4 kg/m2) plus biodynamic preparations (4ppm/ha).
The following characteristics were analysed at the end of the experiment: yield, total
weight, dry-matter, total weight of leaves, number of roots per kg, average length of
roots, average diameter of roots, quality characteristics, Brix (%), tissues texture,
average contents of alpha and beta carotene, vitamin A, and characteristics related to
post-harvesting conservation 5 and 10 days in normal environmental conditions, and 30 to
65 days in cold camera 120C. All treatments had significant differences affecting carrots
yield and dry-matter production.Highest dry-matter content was obtained in treatment D
(using cattle manure). On the other hand, treatments had no significant differences
affecting the weight of roots and leaves, number of roots/kg or size of roots. Quality was
affected considering texture, b-carotene and vitamin A.Treatments F, D and E, showed
better results. Significant differences within treatments for texture were observed
obtaining highest values with organic fertilisation treatments. Vitamin A and b-carotene
contents were significantly higher in treatment F (using compost plus biodynamics
preparations). Treatments significantly affected post-harvesting conservation. Durability
of carrots grown in treatments with chemical fertilisation maintained at environmental
conditions during 5 to 10 days was lower. Similar results were obtained under
refrigeration. Treatment F had better performance. Fernandes, P. D. et al Nutrigao mineral de hortaligas.
