In 1994 the Stiftung Ökologie & Landbau
started together with the Landesanstalt für Pflanzenbau und Pflanzenschutz a ten year
project on soil tillage in organic farming. The project is sponsored by the
Rheinland/Pfalz-Ministry of Business and Agriculture. The main aim of the project is the
development and demonstration of appropriate soil tillage methods for arable crop
productions on organic farms. Several types of deep cultivation systems (inverting and not
inverting) in a special crop rotation are tested. Accompanying scientific research is
applied on soil properties (and their development) and on the interactions between soil
tillage, crop growth and flora and fauna of the production site. First results show a tendency of higher biological soil activity using loosening, but not inverting the subsoil tillage systems like with the layer cultivator or the two-layer plough with comparable yields. |
